IPL 2023: Top three wicket-takers of league stage

It is a famous adage that the batters win you games while the bowlers win you the tournament. In a format like T20, the bowlers play a huge role in the success of their team and once again the world-class bowlers flowered in the league stage of IPL 2023.

There were some brilliant performances in the league stage of IPL 2023 and the bowlers were able to get the job done for their respective teams. We take a look at the top three wicket-takers of the league stage.

Mohammed Shami: Gujarat Titans Mohammed Shami is not well known for his T20 bowling but he was right on the money in IPL 2023 league stage and proved his mettle. Shami got the new ball to swing both ways to breathe down the neck of the opposition batters. The veteran made the most of his experience to deliver the goods for the Hardik Pandya-led team.

Shami scalped 24 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 17.62 and an economy rate of 7.70 in the league stage. Ergo, he played an instrumental role in helping GT reach the playoffs and finish the league stage at the numero uno position with 10 wins in 14 games.

Rashid Khan: The Afghanistan spinner continued to bamboozle the world-class batters with his tricks. Khan took a total of 24 wickets in 14 games at an average of 18.25 and an economy rate of 7.82. The leg-spinner continued to stem the flow of runs in the middle overs and played a key role in the success of the team.

Khan bowled at his absolute best and he along with Mohammed Shami did a great job for the Hardik Pandya-led team.

Yuzvendra Chahal: Rajasthan Royals leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal continued to impress in IPL 2023. The veteran delivered the goods for the Sanju Samson-led team. Chahal took a total of 21 wickets in 14 matches at an average of 20.57 and an economy rate of 8.17.

Chahal also leapfrogged Dwayne Bravo’s tally of 183 wickets to become the highest wicket-taker in the history of the IPL. However, Chahal’s heroics with the ball went in vain as Rajasthan Royals failed to qualify for the playoffs despite getting off to a good start in the tournament.
