Shardul Thakur Undergoes Successful Foot Surgery, Faces Three-Month Recovery

India’s versatile all-rounder, Shardul Thakur, has successfully undergone foot surgery on Wednesday, June 12, marking the second surgery for the cricketer in the past five years. The 32-year-old shared the news with his fans on Instagram, posting a photo of himself post-surgery with the caption, “Operated successfully.”

This development comes as a setback for the Indian cricket team, as Thakur is expected to be sidelined from competitive cricket for a minimum of three months.

Thakur, who sustained his injury during the South Africa tour earlier this year, last represented India in the first Test at Centurion, where the team suffered a significant defeat against the Proteas. Despite his injury woes, Thakur’s contribution to Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy campaign were commendable, playing a pivotal role in securing the team’s 42nd title.

Reflecting on his recent performances, Thakur’s stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was less than stellar. He managed to take only five wickets from nine matches, with an economy rate of 9.75. CSK, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, failed to qualify for the playoffs after being knocked out by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the league’s final game.

Acknowledging the toll that injuries have taken on his career, Thakur has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for longer breaks to ensure adequate recovery and preparation time. This move aims to help players like him maintain their performance levels and avoid recurring injuries.

The surgery was performed by the same physician who previously operated on India’s right-arm pacer Mohammed Shami in London. With an estimated recovery time of around eight weeks, there is cautious optimism that Thakur might be fit to return for the India vs. Australia Test series, scheduled for the end of the year. His potential return could prove crucial for the Indian team, especially with the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 on the horizon.

Thakur’s versatility as a lower-order batter and medium-paced bowler makes him an invaluable asset to the team. His ability to contribute in both departments of the game provides much-needed balance and depth to the Indian squad. The fans and team management are hopeful that he will make a strong comeback, fully recovered and more resilient.

Reflecting on Thakur’s recent comments, he emphasized the importance of adequate rest and recovery. “It’s crucial for us players to have enough time to recuperate and prepare, especially with the demanding schedule we face. The BCCI has been supportive, and I hope to return stronger,” Thakur mentioned in a recent interview.

Despite his injury setbacks, Thakur remains a Grade C contract holder with the BCCI, which has covered the expenses for his treatment. His commitment to the sport and his team’s success is evident from his willingness to play through injuries and contribute significantly, as seen during the Ranji Trophy.

Looking ahead, the upcoming months will be critical for Thakur as he focuses on his recovery and rehabilitation. His presence in the India vs. Australia Test series could provide a much-needed boost to the team, particularly given his track record of performing well under pressure. The Indian cricket community, including fans and fellow players, will undoubtedly keep a close eye on his recovery progress, eagerly awaiting his return to the field.
