Kerala Blasters Sign Promising Goalkeeper Som Kumar in Major Boost Under New Coach Mikael Stahre

Kerala Blasters FC has secured a significant addition to their squad with the signing of promising young goalkeeper Som Kumar. The 19-year-old talent from Karnataka joins the Indian Super League (ISL) outfit on a four-year contract, extending his stay with the club until 2028. 

This signing marks the first acquisition under new head coach Mikael Stahre, reflecting the club’s commitment to building a strong and dynamic team for the upcoming seasons.

Kumar arrives at Kerala Blasters from NK Olimpija Ljubljana, a top-tier Slovenian club where he has been honing his skills. His move back to India comes on the heels of an impressive stint in international youth competitions, which has seen him establish himself as a rising star in Indian football.

The young goalkeeper was an integral part of the Indian squad that triumphed at the SAFF U-20 Championship in 2022. His performances at the tournament, where India emerged as champions, highlighted his potential under pressure. 

In 2023, Kumar continued to build on his international experience by participating in the AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers in Kuwait. Later that year, he played a crucial role in India’s victorious campaign at the SAFF U-19 Championship held in Kathmandu, Nepal.

The club’s sporting director, Karolis Skinkys, also expressed high hopes for Kumar’s future with Kerala Blasters. “Without intention to create any pressure on him, but I can positively say that Som is one of the highest potential players in his generation. I’m happy he believed in the Kerala Blasters project and decided to come back from abroad,” Skinkys stated.
