Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar has hailed Rohit Sharma’s aggressive approach in the ongoing World Cup 2023. Rohit is playing with all the freedom at the top of the order and he is also producing the goods for his team.
Manjrekar said he likes this avatar of Rohit Sharma as India is winning more convincingly because of the starts their skipper is providing them. After getting dismissed for a duck in the opening match against Australia, Rohit has provided a rollicking start to his team in all four matches in the run-chase.
Rohit scored a whirlwind knock of 46 runs off just 40 balls with the help of four fours and as many sixes against New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala on Sunday.
India was chasing 274 runs against the Kiwis and Rohit was once again able to hit the ground running. In fact, there was some help on offer for Matt Henry and Trent Boult but Rohit decided to back his aggressive approach and took the attack against New Zealand’s opening pair of fast bowlers.
Rohit added 71 runs for the opening alliance with Shubman Gill, who played second fiddle in the partnership. In fact, Rohit has adopted an aggressive batting mantra in the ongoing ODI showpiece and he has scored 311 runs in five matches at an average of 62.20 and a blistering strike rate of 133.48.
“Shubman Gill was also there alongside him, the way he is playing. When 70 runs are scored in the first 10 overs, it becomes very easy later. The talk was about Trent Boult’s swing, and that Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry could trouble the Indian batters a lot on this pitch,” said Manjrekar on Star Sports.
“I like this Rohit Sharma because India are winning more and winning more convincingly. He scored five centuries in 2019 but India’s performance didn’t look this convincing. Yes, he is scoring forties but is going after setting a good platform,” Manjrekar added.
Rohit is taking the bull by its horns and his aggressive start is giving a heads-up to India in the ongoing showpiece.
India will next take on reigning champions England at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Sunday.
