Mohun Bagan Super Giant announce the signing of experienced Spanish defender Hector Yuste

Indian Super League teams Mohun Bagan Super Giant have bolstered their roster by roping in Spanish defender Hector Yuste ahead of the upcoming season.

The experienced defender featured for Cypriot top-tier club AC Omonia last season. In his two years at the club, Yuste won the Cypriot Cup twice and the also bagged the Cypriot Super Cup in 2021.

He also featured in the Europa League and the UEFA Conference League group-stage clashes. Yuste also started for Omonia in both games when they faced Premier League club Manchester United.

Yuste’s experience and his ability to also slot in as a defensive midfielder will add great value to Juan Ferrando’s team, especially after Carl McHugh’s departure.

The Spaniard has also plied his trade for teams like Mallorca, Granada, Hercules, racing Santander, etc. His experience of playing at the top level will surely help the Green and Maroons.

Yuste spoke about the club’s legacy and the amazing fanbase which has attracted him to join MBSG. He also shared how Spanish players and coaches have gained popularity after plying their trade in India.

“Mohun Bagan Super Giant are one of the historic clubs in India. They were also the champions of the previous season. I have come to know that this club has one of the best popularities and fanbases in the country. Many Spanish coaches and players have gained recognition by playing in India. I am truly excited about donning the Green and Maroon jersey. I’ll strive to give my best for the club to achieve more success,” the 35-year-old defender said after putting pen to paper.

MBSG head coach Juan Ferrando has shown trust in Hector’s experience and believes that his leadership quality will help the club going forward. “Hector (Yuste) is an experienced player who has enjoyed success in the Spanish first division. I have had the chance to watch him play, and I believe that his experience and leadership qualities will greatly benefit Mohun Bagan Super Giant.”

While McHugh has left the club, MBSG still have defenders like Brendan Hamill and Florentin Pogba and now with Yuste’s addition, Ferrando will have to make a choice. The Green and Maroons started their new season officially with the Durand Cup on Thursday as they thrashed Bangladesh Army by five goals. However, only Liston Colaco and Manvir Singh played from the senior team with a bunch of talented youngsters from the junior side.
