Tennis legend Rafael has won 13 French Open titles, four US Open titles, two Wimbledon titles but he only has a solitary title at the Australian Open. Nadal has qualified for 28 Grand slam finals and he has won 20 out of them, which is a great conversion rate.
Nadal has qualified for four Australian Open finals but he has been able to savor success in only one edition. The Spaniard won his first and last Australian Open back in 2009 but he hasn’t been able to go the way in the tournament despite making three finals in the last decade.
Nadal made it to the final of the Australian Open in 2012, 2014, and 2017 but he hasn’t been able to cross the final hurdle. The 34-year old stated that he doesn’t see any particular reason for not winning more than one title at the Australian Open.
Nadal feels he had a great chance of winning the AO back in 2014 but he suffered a back injury when he faced Stan Wawrinka in the final.
“I don’t find a real reason. I think I had a big chance in 2014. I got injured during the match, in the back. It was a tough one,” Nadal said.
In fact, the Spaniard also reminded the reporters that no player in the history of the Open era has won twice in every single event.
However, there will be question marks on Nadal’s progress in the 2021 Australian Open as he is struggling with pain in his lower back. In fact, Nadal had decided to pull out of the first two matches of the ATP Cup for Spain due to the same injury woes.
Nadal will lock horns against Serbian Laslo Đere in the first round of the Australian Open. The legend will look to go all the way in the Australian Open and he will look to get off to a good start.
